V&V of Hardware and Sensing Technologies

The physical reliability and functional integrity of an autonomous system’s sensing and processing hardware form the bedrock of its safety case, as a foundation that has not been rigorously verified remains merely an assumption. To move from raw electrical signals to certifiable decision-making, a multi-layered approach to Verification and Validation (V&V) is required, spanning from the foundational silicon design to the operational performance of complex sensor suites in the real world. This process begins with the rigorous silicon and circuit-level checks enabled by Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and production stress-testing, ensuring that components meet the stringent deterministic requirements of automotive and aerospace standards. It then advances to the functional verification of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and high-speed communication networks through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) emulation and systematic fault injection, which confirms the system’s ability to handle malfunctions and reach a minimal-risk condition. Finally, the validation of the perception stack is anchored in high-precision spatiotemporal calibration and scenario-based performance evaluation, bridging the gap between raw hardware specifications and the safety-critical needs of the Operational Design Domain (ODD). By establishing this traceable evidence trail, engineers can effectively bound physical uncertainties and ensure the hardware architecture remains robust against both random hardware failures and probabilistic environmental stressors.
